ART DIY 2012 Sarah Faulkner
Breathing is released through connection. This can happen too when we get injected and it can happen when we release it.
When we are totally clean, there is nothing to do but die, or get dirty again. When we are totally dirty, there is nothing to do but get clean again.
A continual process of purification
Like a bullet through water
We all have connection to our bodies 24 hours a day whether we know it or not, remember it or not. We have at least 50,000 opportunities to remember it every day, through our breathing is one way. And so came the invitation to come into this ART space and come to a better educated set of actions and reactions. One of the 50,000 opportunities of everyday could become a new or higher quality of relationship with the Body as Art.
Body as Art
I came with a notion, a notion that had no words until it arrived.
It took simple clay modelling to unpacking what the inside and the outside of our bodies may or may not do. Or rather it presented a perfect reason to lift the lid on this discussion!. For me to be clear about this ‘body as art’ was to rummage in a tool kit of ideas, practical knowledge, discussion on concepts trials and errors, forgetting and remembering. What a rich and dense terrain was literally in our hands!
Breathing and the bleeding supply information for the energy of the form itself –the manifestation. Then the process leads to products and maintains certain forms and certain powers (the beautiful blood samples; the water; the breathing apparatus all evidence). Ideas can be dreamt up, plans and scripts and sets constructed but it is always the body thinking, the body pumping and the body taking forms. And it can also be quite beautiful!
The Conscious Connected Breathwork practise I have learnt teaches the deep importance of working with all elements. It teaches spiritual purification and transformation. It also teaches that we are born to be, birthed, transform over and over and then die – this is the dynamic of the body. I wondered how to work with these? I do not want to restrict breathing or create pain. I want to present a gift to the audience, and one that they can share. Not breathing, not bleeding, not cleansing becomes a sub personality that can control our bodies. Wow! It can become a part of our identity so to expose it can bring confusion dizziness or even disconnection –how could the audience experience these, and know that they are in experience? It is real…could it be ‘performed’ ?

Most people when they are asked ‘how were you born?’, they do not know, or they do know, or they have a story they have been told. And those that do not know still have the story of not knowing or making up a story or even choosing a story of another’s birth to help them make sense of their body. And do they want to share that story? Oh boy! Stories make us who we are! Like our body is dependent upon air and gravity for a meaningful “separate existence”. Our birth ‘story’ is marvellous and beautiful. Who controls it?
Shall we strike a deal to find out?
Are you willing to support me with this?
What if the time it took to tell your ‘story’ of how you arrived and took breath, actually took breath, and time and blood from another? After all this is As Body Does. It is hard to get more intimate that this, the actions are a sequence to expose that the body is always in a transition state. Like always in a space between ideas and yet never without a space. Swapping birth story for blood and gas was the deal struck – win-win perhaps – yet laden with living history; remembering each cell has the imprint of individuality.
(I need another coffee- it’s enough to explode your mind-no wonder this time together was so sweet!)

As a consequence of these ingredients shaken and stirred through Body as Art, the job for me to carry forward seems more obvious now; it certainly feels safer to swing into artistic practise of this nature when you have informed certainty that you will swing out of it.
(For me, our society does not give adults overt permissions to be in relationship with the Body as Art until we are so immobilized by it seeps out anyway).
The next phase I think as I write will be headed ‘An Index of Possibilities.’

Testament to ART DIY 2012
I came to ART for the gift of opportunity to expand into artistic community and watch it increase my energy, ideas and process. I have wanted to engage with my Body as a site to create Art and show the inner, the outer, the sharing the knowing; without knowing how...…
And I was hesitant for too long of the celling that body art has been–predominantly male- so this seemed an extraordinary opportunity to hear another voice, to be part of another body based practise, to be curious.
So we arrive at working with women. Wow! Not forceful, the rhetoric is more open. We have mentor, medic and mulling’s over meals. We had the container of five days to be get clearer on what are the under currents of body based art. This could not be done without time… * a most valuable gift of ART DIY was time * and this lead to investigating my own way; our own ways as artists undergoing organic transformations. Not endorsed, not condoned. Just Is.
We had Mm and Taheen and ART; another gift. With the evidence that is left in the studio and we created residues of an interaction with a body based practise. This allowed me to re-identify where I could be in relation to the practise; on the inside exploring and with questions. A true mentor can only teach everyone around them to learn themselves. And we had two! They are breaking up the ground for new seeds of discussion between art and the medical to be sewn. Both noting that the products and the processes we each engaged with have been used in practise by women in many senses our mentors allowed the ‘lack of the obvious’ to occur. Maiden Art occurred.
Community based one on one and small group artistic development practice is good – very good, like a good visit to the dentist for a teeth clean but more beautiful! But it takes a community of people who are working daily in a container of time with questions and with practical tools and who love it for it to feel really good. When there is time given, with balance to be meeting with people who have truthful, open minds and are willing to engage is the ultimate in freedom, play and power. Artistic community is a group dynamic that has great power; it stimulated my creativity, self-esteem and was at the very least tremendous fun and very satisfying. It is an intelligent thing to give ourselves as artists this kind of support. Artistic community really works!
That’s a great advert for DIY at ART by the way!
If you aren’t in this place now, I recommend that you attend a DIY as soon as possible to catch the spirit of it.
I am looking forward to performing this Body.
