Introduction to
The Hyper ~ Graphic
Score . . .
“It has only to do with reading, and reading something equivalent to
Greek to Latin because the notation is no longer
useful for the music of the twentieth century
it’s only useful for previous centuries”
John Cage 1965.
With a rise of visual culture and the language of the visual with the latter half of the twentieth century and an increased dominance of this form of communication, this quote from Cage is potentially more appt within the ‘now’.
This period of ‘now’ being the early part of the twenty-first century has seen an explosion of visual language within the development of digital advertising / gaming / software development within sound composition – sound can now be visualised beyond notation.
Shareware has become a popular part of this development within new technologies – free downloads – open access –
The democratisation of image and sound as had prolific effect on sound and film production.
The population has become a sophisticated readership of visual language that often needs de-coding at high speed –
Does music need classical notation any longer?
Has notation been challenged?
Should anyone be-able to read and if they can read music also write it?
Hyper - Graphic Scores / notation leads away into the democratisation of sound to be played and written.
The Hyper-Graphic score is the visualisation of sound, movement, texture, pitch, colour and note and is open to a series of interpretations and choice, its very nature requests all participants to negotiate, collaborate, exchange and participate.
The Hyper-Graphic Score is a visual language and employed to reveal, expose translate, pattern, structure, direction, rhythm, transition, decline, incline through lines and colour that enables the player or the dancer to shape space and the time of performance.
Mayhew’s work is leading the way in the breed of a new form of compositional notation that is also being engaged with by dancers as an inspiration for choreographic sequencing of the body and of space.

RADICAL VINYL ~ 2010
Using the near obsolete iconic carrier of sound, the 12 inch vinyl as a canvas, Vinyl Radical explores the ghosts in the groove and the chemical radicals of 3 musicians playing live with their own A & B Side of a hyper-graphically constructed score.
Setting the audience into a disk the players are positioned within, combining the 3 rpm’s to travel along their groves of sound linguistic patterns within the rotational pull towards the centre.
Three equals One as the players natural chemistry of listening and seeing their own paths through combining 3 scores to make one radical whole.
This is a celebration not only of vinyl but also of live music.
